Dunster History

Our volunteer team includes a number of people who are experienced in family and house history research who will be happy to try to help you with your own Dunster researches. As well as the familiar census and baptism/marriage/burial registers etc that are readily available, we also have access to some transcribed data sources that are not readily available elsewhere, including

  • Dunster school admission registers from 1885 to 1925
  • Dunster Land Tax records from 1780 to 1833
  • Cemetery records, including burial plot no., from 1880 to 1945 (and some later ones) – this is work-in-progress which we expect to complete during 2025

As part of our House History research, carried out in conjunction with the Early Dunster Project (include link), we have mapped the census data from 1841 to 1939 to specific properties – no mean achievement since the main streets in Dunster didn’t have house numbers until the 1960s! – so that we are able now in about 90% of cases identify the occupants of each dwelling throughout that time, and in many cases can trace through to earlier records as well.

Please note that not all our museum stewards are experienced with this research. If you have a specific query, or would like some general advice, it would be best to email us (dunstermemorialhall@gmail.com) in the first instance.
